This guided tour of Marrakech is a half-day walk through the medina with a licensed local guide — the best way to make sense of the city on your first day. You start beneath the 77-metre minaret of the Koutoubia, then wind through the lanes to the Saadian Tombs, hidden for centuries until 1917, and the Bahia Palace with its painted cedar ceilings and shaded courtyards.
The route continues through the souks — dyers, metalworkers, spice and leather sellers — with explanations of how the medina still works today, and ends at Jemaa el-Fnaa as the square comes alive. There are no commission shopping stops: if you want to buy, your guide helps you find the right quarter and bargain fairly. Majorelle Garden can be added on request. Before you go, read our Marrakech medina guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you book
What does the guided Marrakech medina tour include?
A walking route through the historic centre with a licensed local guide, taking in Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna. Monument entrance fees are usually paid on the day.
How long does the tour last and how much walking is there?
Around four hours at an unhurried pace, almost all of it on foot over uneven medina lanes. Comfortable shoes matter more here than anything else you bring.
Can I do this tour in French, Spanish or Arabic?
Yes. Guides are available in English, French, Spanish and Arabic. Tell us your preferred language when you book so the right guide is assigned.
Will the guide take me to shops for commission?
No. You will pass through the souks because they are part of the medina, but there is no obligatory carpet or argan-oil stop. If you do want to shop, the guide can help you find the right quarter and negotiate.
What is the best time of day for the medina tour?
Morning, for cooler lanes and open monuments, or late afternoon so the walk ends at Jemaa el-Fna as the food stalls are being set up and the square fills.
How should I dress for visiting the medina?
Anything comfortable and reasonably modest works, with shoulders and knees covered making things easier around religious sites. In summer bring a hat and water; the souks are shaded but the open squares are not.
